A week post surgery… Maggie’s getting stronger

Hi all –

It has been a very busy week.  Maggie continues to improve each day.  I am amazed at how strong she really is.  She is almost able to get up on her own, and needs a lot less assistance walking.  She is starting to understand the tripawd thing 🙂  I am working with her on her balance and trying to take many short jaunts around the yard during the day.

I had to leave her for awhile yesterday, and she seemed to be ok. I was worried about separation anxiety, but I think she is more comfortable with her situation and less dependent on Rich and I.

The wound looks great!  Big scar, obviously, but no fluid seepage and no infection or redness.  Even the bruising was gone in only a few days.

Although we have a lot more to do, we made the BEST decision for our dog and she will be with us for awhile!  Fortunately, this is not cancer (that we know based on test and xrays) so I am hoping by removing the leg, the problem is finally gone!

Very, very tired…

4/21 – I am so tired, I can’t see.

Last night was tough.

Maggie had some trouble settling down.  She would nap for 15 minutes, then get up and whine.  I did take her out – that wasn’t it.  I think she just wanted me to sleep on the dog bed with her.  I did.   She wanted to cuddle.  I did. She wanted to feel safe.  She did.  Until the storm came…

Thunder and lightning?  Really?  She is PETRIFIED of both.  I was praying that it would pass quickly.  It lasted about an hour.  That was somewhere between 3 and 4 am.  I ended up giving her a Xanax because she shook so hard I thought she was going to pop her 70 staples.  Yes, I said 70.  On a different note, my muscles haven’t been this sore in MONTHS.  I know I am getting a good workout but sheesh.

Tired and sore but  STILL WORTH IT.  She is stronger each day and happier each day.

One of these days I will get the nerve to post pictures of her scar.  It was horrifying at first, now we are used to it.  I wasn’t prepared though for the bruising from the harness.  Purple belly, I feel so bad.  Part of the process.

MAGGIE UPDATE 4/20

Surgery on Thursday 4/16 – Came home 4/19

First full day at home on 4/20!  Last night was RUFF… as she cried for about 45 minutes and then I figured out it wasn’t in pain she was crying.  She wanted to go potty!  The poor girl didn’t want to go in the house… good girl!

I can’t believe she was operated on just last Thursday.  She is not quite getting up yet on her own, but I can see she is stronger today. She can stand for a little longer and she’s getting her balance.  I still have a million questions and concerns but I know Rich and I made the RIGHT CHOICE.  She is a blessing.
